Woven vinyl backing guide
Choose what sits behind the weave.
The woven face gives a material its visible texture. The backing is the layer or combination of layers behind it. At Juvern, woven vinyl constructions include dense PVC, lightweight non-woven fabric, foamed PVC and non-woven/PVC combinations. The right starting point depends on where the material will be used and how it should feel.
01 / Compare the options
Four constructions, different starting points
All thicknesses below are total finished product thicknesses, including the woven face. Available combinations depend on the collection, design and format.
Dense PVC backing
A compact, solid PVC backing, mainly used for flooring. It can also be considered for selected wall applications after reviewing the material weight and fixing method.
- Why consider it?
- A firm, substantial underfoot feel for a flooring brief.
- Finished thickness
- Standard 2.5 mm (approx. 0.10 in); options up to approximately 5–6 mm (0.20–0.24 in), subject to the selected construction.
Felt / non-woven fabric
Here, felt means a non-woven fabric backing. Its lighter construction makes it a useful starting point for wallcoverings, upholstered or decorative panels and other interior facing applications.
- Where is it used?
- Wall panels, headboards, RV interiors and luggage-rack facings. Review the specific use and support with the fabricator.
- Installation discussion
- Confirm a compatible adhesive, including whether a contact adhesive is appropriate, for the supplied backing and substrate. Request a bonded sample or mockup.
Foamed PVC backing
A softer, spongier PVC backing for projects seeking a more cushioned, resilient underfoot feel.
- Why consider it?
- Start here when softness is part of the brief, then review the sample against the actual traffic, furniture and installation requirements.
- Finished thickness
- Constructions up to 6 mm (approx. 0.24 in). Confirm the available thickness for the selected product.
Non-woven + PVC
A composite construction combines non-woven fabric and PVC behind the woven face. The non-woven layer can sit between the face and PVC, or beneath a dense PVC layer.
- Why discuss it?
- To review a combined build-up for a specific application and fixing method.
- What to confirm
- The exact layer order, finished thickness, exposed underside and installation method. Layer order alone does not establish a performance rating.
02 / Read the construction
The same layers can be arranged differently
These simplified diagrams show the two composite arrangements Juvern can discuss. They are layer-order illustrations, not scaled manufacturing drawings or installation specifications.
- Woven vinyl face
- Non-woven fabric
- PVC backing
- Woven vinyl face
- Dense PVC backing
- Non-woven fabric
The underside that meets the adhesive or support is different in each arrangement. Record the approved layer order with the sample and quotation. The supporting floor, wall or panel and its attachment are additional parts of the finished assembly.
03 / Choose by application
Start with the use, then compare the sample
- For a floor: compare dense PVC for a firmer feel and foamed PVC when cushioning matters. Include traffic, rolling chairs, furniture loads, thresholds and the subfloor in the review.
- For a wall or decorative panel: start by discussing a lightweight non-woven construction. Include the wall or panel substrate, corners, joints and bonding method; some projects may call for a different build-up.
- For an RV interior or headboard: identify the precise surface, support and fixing details. A material used as a decorative facing is not automatically a seating-upholstery product.
- For a rug or composite assembly: request the proposed backing, underside and finished edge together. Do not choose a rug backing from a flooring swatch alone.

04 / Compare flooring choices
How does woven vinyl compare with familiar flooring options?
Compare a complete proposed floor, including its backing or underlay, installation and care plan. A category name or overall thickness alone cannot tell you how two products will feel or perform.
| Flooring option | What to compare | The Juvern decision |
|---|---|---|
| Flexible LVT / LVP | A decorative tile or plank surface. Product-specific installation may be glue-down, floating or loose-lay. Check the exact system, substrate preparation and care instructions. RFCI guidance. | Consider woven vinyl when a visible woven texture fits the design. Compare the proposed dense or foamed backing and approved installation; do not assume it uses the same click or loose-lay system as an LVT product. |
| Rigid-core SPC / WPC | A rigid core, sometimes with an attached underlay. Many products use a floating click system; check flatness, expansion space and moisture requirements. RFCI guidance. | A dense or foamed PVC backing is a different construction from a rigid click-lock core. Compare the finished floor height and installation scope, rather than matching thickness alone. |
| Carpet | The pile or surface construction, fiber and specified cushion all matter. Match the carpet and cushion to the room and traffic, then compare cleaning plans. CRI selection guidance. | Handle a woven vinyl sample alongside the carpet sample. Dense PVC offers a firmer feel; foamed PVC is the cushioned option to discuss. A woven appearance does not mean the same feel or acoustic performance as carpet. |
| Wood flooring | If natural wood is the design priority, review the species, finish and construction. Include humidity control and the manufacturer's care requirements; wood responds to changes in moisture. NWFA guidance. | Woven vinyl offers a different material expression. Compare physical samples and each product's care and substrate requirements; it is not a substitute for the natural-wood character of the selected floor. |
| Ceramic / porcelain tile | Review the tile, grout and complete setting assembly. Include substrate preparation, transitions and movement-joint planning. TCNA movement-joint guidance. | If a cushioned feel is part of the brief, compare a foamed-PVC sample. For wet or demanding areas, review the actual product and assembly requirements before choosing either material. |
Compare installed cost and ongoing care on the same basis
Juvern's standard 2.5 mm roll material reference is approximately US$2/sq ft for Core and US$3–4/sq ft for Signature. Obtain a current quotation for each alternative, then add the same scope: delivery, taxes, removal, preparation, adhesive or underlay, installation, trims and layout allowance. Custom backings need their own quotation. The budget guide explains stock cut lengths and production order minimums.
For ongoing care, compare the actual cleaning method, frequency and equipment. Standard PVC-backed Juvern flooring calls for regular vacuuming, prompt spill removal and controlled wet cleaning with effective water recovery. Special backings need their own instructions. See Juvern care guidance.
05 / Questions before specification
What else should you check?
Does a thicker or softer backing mean better acoustics?
Thickness and softness describe the construction and feel; they do not establish an acoustic rating. If sound control matters, identify the exact product, backing and installed assembly, then request relevant test information. Impact sound transmitted through a floor and sound absorbed within a room are different questions.
Can every Juvern color be supplied with every backing?
Confirm availability for the selected collection, color and format. These are construction options to discuss, not a promise that every combination is available. Eco Resonance is a separate PVC-free woven textile tile collection and uses its own specifications.
Do standard flooring prices cover custom backings?
The published Core and Signature reference prices apply to standard 2.5 mm flooring rolls, for material only. A thicker, cushioned or composite construction, wallcovering, rug or fabricated panel needs a matching quotation. Use the budget guide to separate material and project costs.
Can I use the same adhesive or test result for every construction?
Match installation instructions and performance information to the actual backing, substrate and use. Confirm adhesive compatibility with the project installer or fabricator. Published Signature flooring parameters describe their tested conditions and do not automatically apply to a different backing or wall assembly.
